The Kinsey Institute: The Mystery! The Intrigue!
I'm from Indianapolis. Indiana University is only about an hour from me. I know tons of people who've gone there. I've been there many, many times for a variety of different reasons, but I never knew where the Kinsey Institute was on campus. Granted I've never like done a big search for it or anything, but I know people who spent 4 years there who have said they don't know where it is either. It's a mysterious place, that much was clear.
But guess what?
I went there this week, my friends, and you know what? It's not really mysterious. It's in Morrison Hall, and it says "Kinsey Institute" on the big sign out front. It's close to Jordan Hall. I admit, we got kinda lost walking back to it through the woody pathed back way after lunch, but not really that lost. It was really pretty easy to find, and if you went there for 4 years, I kinda feel like you should have seen where it was at some point.
But wait there's more
Now, you'd think I'd be disappointed that the mystery was lost, but you'd be wrong. You see, it's on the 3rd floor, so we were being all cool about it and decided to use the stairs, but guess what? NO ENTRY FROM THE STAIRS!!!! (I'm using all caps to emphasize the thrilling intrigue of it all). We had to walk down one flight and then take the elevator up. Then, we talked to the very nice receptionist there, and told her we had an appointment for the library/archives ('cause YOU NEED AN APPOINTMENT AND A RESUME AND PROOF THAT YOU'RE THERE FOR A REASON), and she told us we had to use the stairs behind us to go up to the fourth floor - BECAUSE I DON'T THINK THE ELEVATOR GOES UP THAT FAR!!!! Also we had to MANIPULATE THE DOOR A CERTAIN WAY SO THAT IT WOULD OPEN FOR US (This is my theory, actually. She gave oddly specific directions for how to go through it, and when we came back from lunch - a little late because we got a little lost - I did a quick test and made the conclusion above). DON'T DARE ASK! I WILL NEVER TELL THE SECRETS OF THE 4TH FLOOR KINSEY DOOR! Then, as we were heading up the stairs, CHARLIE SPOTTED A WEIRD 50'S BRIEFCASE IN THE STAIRWELL! We really don't know what it was for. WAS IT KINSEY'S ACTUAL BRIEFCASE THAT HE LEFT TO BE KEPT THERE IN MUSEUM-LIKE QUALITY, THE CONTENTS UNKNOWN TO THIS DAY??? Then we got to the fourth floor....AND THE GUY SHAWN THERE WAS SUPER HELPFUL AND NICE!!!! (That's kinda intriguing, right?...sometimes people aren't that helpful or nice).
But what's in it for you?
Anywho, that's what happened. It was actually super duper interesting and awesome. We spent the whole day there, and I didn't get through all the material I wanted to see, so I'm going back. However, I saw enough to start a little series called WHAT I FOUND AT THE KINSEY INSTITUTE LIBRARY!!! Some will coincide with my Journal Articles I Read Series, Some will very weirdly coincide with the SSL Review series, and others will be just little interesting tidbits.
I'm so glad I got the chance to go. I probably should have gone while I was researching for the movie SSL. It wouldn't have changed much given my particular needs, but it would have been way cool, and made a few things easier. I was also a little less confident then. At some point a long time ago, I read something that made me think I probably wouldn't get permission to go, even though I was very likely wrong about that. Instead, I just read long-ass manuscripts of Kinsey Institute round tables and found my material elsewhere. None of that matters anymore though, I have reached a little slice of heaven there, and I will enjoy and utilize it fully from now on.

#DirectedByWomen
Guess what? Today is a very special day. It is the beginning of Directed by Women, a two week global party to enjoy and celebrate film made by the ladies! Get your friends, get your co-workers, curl up with a favorite pet, attend a party - whatever you got to do, but by golly, by George, watch a movie directed by a woman! You got 2 weeks.
I really like this concept. It's like a million times more accessible than just a film festival, and it's got this fun, light-hearted, community feel that makes it easy to be part of. All you need to do is watch and/or talk. It's as easy as picking a lady-directed movie and sitting on a couch with your nasty pajamas and some microwave popcorn to watch it. It's even as easy as mentioning it to a co-worker. If you want to get real wild, tweet, facebook, instagram, or what-have-you about it (#DirectedByWomen), or invite a few friends over to your house to watch. You don't even have to cook. Make it a pitch-in. Get even crazier and write a blog, set up a small community event for a showing, attend a showing, or tweet out pics of your Directed By Women celebration. There could be nothing easier, really, and you get so see great film! If you are unsure what movies are directed by women check it HERE, or Google that shit, I mean, come on, it ain't that hard. I was also glad to see the catalyst for this was another Hoosier - that's right, there is more than corn in Indiana. Barbara Ann O'Leary from Bloomington (you can read more about her and the concept HERE), got this rolling, and I tip my hat to her.
So, why do I care, you ask. Well, I am a woman director (that's just a cheap plug for Science, Sex and the Ladies), but also this event is about female voices in our media, about a perspective from the ladies being an equal and valued part of the cultural conversation. That's what this blog and our movie is all about. We focus particularly on only one aspect of that female perspective, the one surrounding orgasm, but none the less it, like all the other parts of the female perspective, needs to be heard, and it's not going to happen unless we get more women creating and shaping the things that entertain and inform us.
So, in honor of Directed By Women, I will be posting every day till it's over. They may be short little posts, but I will make sure I get off my ass and do at least that because I think this is important.

Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 - SSL Indy Premiere!!!!
I'm kinda busy, and although I have a bunch of blog post ideas (super substantial ones, people) I really want to do, I haven't had enough time to sit and really get to them. So, I'm going to write about something quickly...the upcoming Indianapolis Premiere of Science, Sex and the Ladies (Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 doors 6:30 movie 7:30). This premiere thing is one of the reasons I haven't had much time lately, so it seems appropriate.
Anyway, I've been a-hustlin' trying to get the word out, and it's been going pretty well. I think it's going to be a good crowd. I have to give my sister big props on that. She's a monster advertiser me, and I love that silly bitch for it. She's ride or die all the way. Seriously, it's really cool to have people around that support me like this. I love you Mel, and I love all those other ab fab friends and cast members who are hard core repping for this movie out there. It's pretty awesome.
I'm getting excited, and if any of you out there are from Indy or have Indy friends, I'd love to see you or your lovely pals. We'll have some good brews there from Scarlet Lane Brewery. We picked the Brewery because it's in McCordsville, where we all at AnC went to high school (well, the school is technically in Fortville, but they're pretty much the same town), and because there's a woman brewing there, which is not as common as it should be...and because the beer is really good. I had a cinnamon sugar beer that tasted like some bad ass cinnamon toast. It was buttery and everything. It was a dark beer through, and I know not everyone is into them, but if you are...
Point is - I'm excited about Thursday, and If you are around, come out to the show. Tickets are only $6 bucks. Get em' HERE.

Marketing Science, Sex and the Ladies - Press Kits, DVDs, and Festivals, Oh My!
May I just take a moment and give you all out there a little bit of an overview about what is going on here in SSL land. I figure this blog is partially about the experiences and so forth of making this independent movie, so maybe I should catch you up on the background work from time to time.
![]() |
| This is AnC...posed for the camera (on a timer). This was for our 2012 AnC Holiday Card |
I would put our current state of affairs squarely in the 'press kit hell' zone...well kinda. I actually like the press kit part. I mean it is time consuming as hell and tedious and it feels like I am never going to get things finished and out in the time frame I was hoping for. That's all true for sure, but I could say that for every single part of the movie making process - it always takes forever, consumes my life, and involves an annoyingly large amount of attention to detail...and I feel like I'm on the brink of failing at every step. It's all terrible, but you know, not really that bad. The whole movie making process is also one where I feel creative and excited, where there's constant fun bullshitting with people I like. I laugh a lot and make new friends and feel like I'm doing something that I want to do. It's very satisfying actually, and the press kit part of the process is really no different. I would say, though, that it has a slight advantage in that at this stage, I know that we've succeeded in making a movie that we are proud of (otherwise we wouldn't be promoting it). So, maybe I should say we're in press kit heaven...or maybe purgatory is a better description...yeah, cause it does feel like I'll be pushing this damn movie for the next quadrillion years. It's gonna be slow process. I'm in for the long game. The way I see it, endurance is the key when promoting a movie by nobodies from nowhere with no one famous in it and about a subject that is not for discussion in polite company.
So, point being we're doing press kits. We had to get some out to Louisville and Minneapolis for the festivals pretty quickly since the turnaround time between finding out you're in and the festival dates are often closer than you think. We didn't get elaborate for this one. We just went with a basic package containing a DVD and a simple color printing on paper - mostly leading people to our more detailed online press kit. We always do snail mailers though for press kits, but have clear direction to easy online content also. We assume people pay more attention to a package, but want their info easily accessible online.
For our Indy premiere in November (details soon btw), however, and for future press kits, we are creating something more elaborate. It's how we do. We like them to be unique, handmade-ish things that almost feel like a weird little piece of art (with clear and pertinent information, of course). These that we're conjuring up now will involve lots of strangely designed business cards, a lovely box (not that kind...although it may be pink...), ribbon, and lots of other surprises. The brainstorming and research that went into this is kinda stupid, although the three of us at AnC are pretty damn good at this kind of shit. In an odd way, we are like a well oiled machine for these things. We price shop, shoot down each other's ideas, make new ones, go through scenarios, and it's long and involved and kinda hard, but we always have a blast doing these. I'll put up some pics when we're done with them.
So, just for some nuts and bolts of our lives here. Here's the stuff that's been on our to-do list the past few weeks.
Pre-work for press kits
- update online press kit (add festival laurels, ad events, add press quotes and links to reviews)
- update SSL movie site
- burn lots of DVDs (we use blank DVDs pre-printed with the SSL logo)
- create DCP and Blue Ray exhibition copies of SSL
- investigate possible places to send press kits
- assemble contact names, email, and mailing addresses
Paper press kits for Minneapolis and Louisville
- design work for quick paper press kit
- write copy
- investigate possible places to send press kits
- go to post office and mail them
- follow up through email with individualized letter a week later
Indianapolis premiere
- investigate possible venues / visit venues
- negotiate details of event with venue
- create online ticket purchasing site to sell tickets through
- Send ticket and movie info to venue for their site
Indianapolis Press Kits
- Investigate pricing for boxes, cards, etc and create budget
- order all pieces
- write copy for all pieces of press kit
- design work for all cards, stickers, etc
- create individual cover letters for each press kit
- assembly line for press kits
- go to post office and mail them
- follow up through email with individualized letter a week later
Miscellaneous
- enter 3 festivals (these bitches can get expensive, so we just try to enter a few at a time, but consistently do so)
- investigate blogs, etc that may have an interest in reviewing SSL and query them (this takes a lot of searching and a lot of writing personalized emails to people you don't know)
- communication with people hosting small group showings (sending DVDs, following-up, etc)
- dealing with needs for more data space (cause we made this huge, space eating movie)
- discuss next script (ya gotta keep moving forward, right?)

Proxy - The SSL Review
We were chillin' this Labor day weekend, and decided to watch a little Indy indie movie. We saw this director's (Zack Parker) prior movie Scalene after Charlie met the director briefly at the local Indiana Filmmakers Network event, and so when we saw his new one on Netflix, we cued that shit up - cause why go outside on Labor Day, am I right?
Anyway, the movie is called Proxy. It's a thriller with strange-o plot twists, and wouldn't ya know it? There was a scene that was SSL reviewable (favorably), and so here we are. This should be pretty quick, actually. The SSL Review only pertains to depictions or discussion of female masturbation or sexual release. Nothing else matters.
Turns out some lady sneaks a peak on another lady masturbating. It's not some freaky, voyeuristic sexual stuff or anything. Neither lady should have been where she was, and they intersected - simple as that. There was no orgasm at the end of the masturbation. She stopped before it could happen. From the context of the situation, I assume it was because she was upset/sad/angry and just couldn't get her mind right. I'm happy to say, though, that the motions she was using were realistic and clit-centric, which is all I ask. It's not much, really. I mean if women by and large masturbate by stimulating their clitoral/vulva area, then by golly, that's how it should be mostly portrayed in our media (The Hite Report is a great resource for stats about how women masturbate). In this particular situation, the woman was on her back, legs spread and using her hand in a circular motion (a bit roughly for my taste) on her vulva area. There was no silliness with vaginal canal stimulation/penetration types of pornish masturbation or anything - just your simple clit jigglin'.
Oh - and there was also a scene where a woman is banged P-in-V style, standing up, from behind. There was clearly no stimulation happening to the vulva/clit area, not from his nor her hands and not from anything else. There was certainly a penis in that vagina, but the clit was out there on its own, with nothing to stimulate that poor little glans of nerve endings into an orgasm. Unfortunately, in porn and romance novels and definitely movies and TV too, that scenario of PinV banging, minus clit stimulation, is one that is often depicted as eliciting a lady-gasm, but not in Proxy, I'm happy to say.
There may have been other more character based reasons that she was shown to look disinterested and very non orgasmic in this sex scene, but I'd like to think it's also because her organ of sexual pleasure was not being stimulated and there would simply be no sensible reason to depict her coming. Now, I know this scene was not strictly a depiction of sexual release, but I think it's important to include it in the SSL Review anyway. I make the rules here, people, and I think realistic depiction of not orgasming during a sexual act need to be pointed out also.
So, I'm going to give this one 4 out of 5 vulvas. It's a good rating. There was realistic masturbation movements and a realistic depiction of not orgasming from getting banged. Yay Hoosiers! And Yay Richmond (cause you're an Indiana town and your streets are in this movie)!

Minneapolis and Louisville, SSL Is Coming To You!
It took all the power in my being to write "coming" in the title instead of "cumming." There's no reasonable explanation why I'd want to do that. It's not really funnier or more clever, and it doesn't really even make sense. If I maybe titled the post "Minneapolis and Louisville, SSL Is Cumming Inside Your Theaters" or "Minneapolis and Louisville, SSL Can't Wait To Cum Into Your Town," or "Minneapolis and Louisville, SSL Will Make you Cum Right Away To A Theater Near You" - I mean any of those make better use of "cum" vs. "come" than the title I picked and would simply make more sense in a pun sort of way.
Anyway, I am regularly giggly inside my head whenever the word "come" is used, no matter how innocent. That's just true. It's the same way when I hear "fish taco." I can't even believe that people say it with a straight face. I just truly can't fathom how people go about their lives thinking it's perfectly sensible to order fish tacos and then proceed to eat them without even a hint of joke-iness. It's insane to me. Maybe part of that is that I really didn't actively realize that fish tacos existed as a valid menu item (and not just a crude term for lady bits) until I was about 22 years old - and I will not have you judge me for that. I've lived in land-locked Indianapolis my entire life, and I'm not a big seafood eater anyway. I have friends who feel the same way (although probably less intensely), so I know I'm not insane...although it may indicate the level of worldliness and class of my close companions.
That was not the point of this post though. WE HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO OUR FIRST 2 FESTIVALS!
The Minneapolis Underground Film Festival in, well, Minneapolis obviously. It will be taking place from Thursday October 2nd thru Sunday October 5th.
The Imaginarium Film Festival in Louisville. It's actually part of the Imaginarium creative writing convention, which is kind of cool, and it is held Friday, Sept. 19th thru Sunday, Sept. 21st.
We don't have the specific details on the times our movie will be playing, but we'll post as soon as we know. So, if you are one of my very mysterious readers who lives in or near Minneapolis or Louisville, tell ALL your friends and caravan down to the theater to catch Science, Sex and the Ladies! And if you do get out to see it, say hi. The other 2 co-directors and I will be there, and we'd love to talk or hang out, or grab a drink - we don't care, we won't have to go to work the next day. Seriously. I'd love to meet you.
There will be more announcements in the next weeks and months for showings around the country. We're gonna start touring with this damn movie. Keep an eye out. We might be cumming to your town!

Ice Saints - The SSL Review
Well, if you were hoping for another indie movie SSL review, then you're in luck because I got 10 tickets to the Indianapolis International Film Fest during their Kickstarter campaign, and the movies I'm seeing keep having something in them about female orgasm. If a movie discusses or depicts female orgasm or masturbation, you know I gots to get at SSL reviewing it, right? So here we are. (And just to be clear - an SSL Review is purely about the ladygasm stuff - not the movie as a whole.)
This time the movie is Ice Saints. Ryan Balas, the director and his then girlfriend (now wife) Deirdre Herlihy. created a documentary-ish movie about the year of their engagement, their wedding, and their honeymoon.Outside of the wedding footage, which was obviously taped by someone else, most of the couple's conversations seemed to be taped by the the couple - ya know, kinda setting it up on a table or something and then having a normal everyday conversation. So, it has a stagy element, but I think the conversations are meant to be indicative of actual spontaneous personal conversations the couple might have.
![]() |
| Ice Saints - Dir. Ryan Balas |
There is one SSL reviewable part and then another part that doesn't quite fit SSL Review criteria, but I found it to be important to the discussion. I'll describe the two scenes first, then I'll get to commenting.
So Deirdre is naked, sitting on the floor against a bed or something, and the camera seems to be set on a dresser maybe and is pointed at her. Ryan walks in from behind her (he's in boxers, but no worries, he gets naked later, so it's square), hands her a drink and sits next to her, and the following conversation happens (these were transcribed in the dark, so the words might not be exact quotes, but it's pretty close).
Ryan: I'm sorry you didn't orgasm. Then they (mostly he) goes on to say things about who cares whether the neighbors hear them and that they should get a better bed, (I believe they have a futon) so that it doesn't squeak like that, etc.
Deirdre: It's okay.
Ryan: You always sound so disappointed,...
Deirdre: I just don't like it when it's so squeaky....
Okay, so that's one. Here's the not quite SSL Review eligible, but related part.
They are at the kitchen table. She's wrapped in a towel, working on her computer. He's naked sitting next to her - and he starts the following conversation.
Ryan: I think you should go off birth control. (pause) I really do. You know what Rachel said. She didn't have any sexual urges, and then she went off birth control, and it all came back.
Deirdre: I don't know...maybe (or something like that)
Alright, now I don't usually have the luxury of hearing director's intentions with their depiction/discussions, but there happen to be a Q&A session with Ryan and Deirdre afterward, so I asked them why they chose to include those two parts given they were the only spoken parts about their sex life. (They asked for awkward questions, okay). Anyway, they both seemed really cool and the basic answer was that they thought things like mediocre sex or a woman not getting an orgasm was something that was real, and not depicted too often. That wasn't exactly how they said it, but I felt the gist was that they wanted to put stuff in their movie about relationships that were not puffed up or over exaggerated, that felt real to them, and that to some extent seemed to them to be under appreciated in other media.
That is kinda what I imagined was going on in their brains, and I really appreciate their openness about it. I actually could not agree more. Sex can be all kinds of things within a relationship. It's not always super hot and great. It can be just fine or even bad. That's normal as shit. We're gonna zero in on the not-orgasming thing though. That too is normal as shit, like way normal...like way more normal than we as a society ever admit, and I love that they included it.
Their situation can be placed right along side the general population. Women in general are simply not orgasming during partnered sex as much as men in general are. This is not often discussed, but it feels like a given. It's viewed as an inevitable reality...cause...women are more finicky and orgasms are harder for us ladies, right?
Well if you read my blog at all, you know the answer is actually no, and that the problem lies not in the make-up of females, but in the deeply rooted way we teach, depict, and engage in sexual activity. It's not inevitable biology. It's cultural, and all us ladies are in the same boat. That's why it's so refreshing to see something that normalizes the experience of no-orgasm sex and doesn't depict some bullshit fake porn-gasm sex. I mean, come on. we have plenty of that already.
That brings me to the getting off birth control to gain more sex-drive part. I think this indicates an interesting and incredibly common, almost ubiquitous phenomenon. Women in long-term relationships, quite good and quite sexual ones even, begin to lose libido quicker than men. It's the old joke about marriage meaning the the end of sex thing, but it's a joke because there's truth to it.
Women in general have way, way more problems with loss of libido, and we as a society so often go to hormonal or emotional problems as the culprit. Maybe though, just maybe, it's that we ladies are having more sexual experiences that end without an orgasm. Whereas most men think forward towards a sexual experience with a woman and can draw on their past experiences to know that the event will be all the many things sex might be....but also almost surely end in an orgasm, that's just not as sure a thing for ladies. Every non-orgasmic experience we have informs us about what to expect from future ones, and frankly, sex without orgasm might not be something any woman or man would get too excited about. So, in this way, sex quickly becomes a different experience for men and women. If men went into sex with a good or even a fair chance they wouldn't orgasm, then they might find sleep a better option too. I mean, there are other reason to get nasty with your partner, but let's not ignore the allure and addictive nature of a good ol orgasm.
So, to me this movie reflected something very real about the experience of a long-term, hetero, sexual relationship, something that most people in that position can relate to. What really kinda excited me though was that it also included two aspects of the female experience that are rarely considered as two pieces of one puzzle. I have no reason to believe the director put them together as a way to connect the lack of orgasm among females with the ridiculously large amount of women dealing with low sex drive. He was just putting common sexual realities in there, and maybe that's the thing. Most people aren't brave enough to talk about these things, but if we were, we'd discover something important. We'd discover that we're all dealing with the same issues and it's not because of our hormones, our emotional turmoil, or our personal problem. We'd find that there is a lady-gasm revolution hiding in plain site. And don't worry gentlemen - this isn't a war. We'd be fighting side by side on this one ;)
I always think that the first step toward orgasm equality is to for people to start relaying sexual experience honestly, and this is certainly a step Ice Saints intentionally took. I'm gonna have to give it a full 5 out of 5 vulva rating.

Fort Tilden - The SSL Review
Well, let’s just say it’s been a whirlwind of a week, but
among it all, I did get to check out some movies at the Indianapolis International Film Fest. As luck would have it, one of them was SSLreview-worthy, which simply means that it discussed or depicted female orgasm
or masturbation. The movie was called Fort Tilden directed by Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers, and as you might expect, it’s
an indie film currently doing its thing through the festival circuit.
The two main characters are post college, Brooklynite women (but
like fancy Brooklyn not regular ol’ Brooklyn – There is a name for the
neighborhood in the movie. I forget it, but it would probably make sense to you
if you were from NYC). Basically they are supposed to be those spoiled,
dumb, urban, millennial girl characters. They’re roommates, and the basic plot
is that they are trying to get to the beach to meet a couple dudes they’re
hoping to mack on, but things keep happening on the way there.
The SSL reviewable comment happened very close to the end. I’ll
try to be general as not to spoil anything, so here goes. One of the ladies takes
a clearly reluctant dude from his beach towel into cold water and tries to
seduce him. She’s being pretty
aggressive and really, really giving this seduction the ol’ college try. She’s trying to touch his junk under water,
but he’s cold and seriously uncomfortable with her advances, but she continues
on and says, “My first orgasm was in the water,” trying to be all sexy baby. He’s
all awkward and wanting to get the hell out of dodge and says, “That sounds
complicated.” And then she comes back with a seductive-style, “Not really. I’ve
just always been able to come so easily.”
That’s the SSL Reviewable line. I’m going to look too much into
that one little line, but that’s an SSL review. I breakdown these depictions
and discussions and look at what it reflects from our culture and also what it
might be adding back into our collective cultural knowledge and attitude. Honestly,
I think this is kinda neutral. It's not progressive nor is it regressive or idiotic. It’s mostly just reflective of our culture’s current relationship to women’s orgasmic abilities, which is why I think it’s an interesting one
to consider.
The movie previously established that she is a ridiculous,
snotty, selfish, manipulative person. That, along with her somewhat desperate attempts
to woo this guy, indicate that her admission of orgasm ease was just some
bullshit she was saying because she thought it would be sexy.
So, I mean yes, her statement was just a simple line in a movie to help
make a character seem like she’s working way too hard to seduce a man. However, if one
breaks down the assumptions and collective cultural knowledge that makes that statement
do what it was meant to do, that’s where it gets interesting. The following things need to be pretty obvious to an audience member.
1 Women aren't known for orgasming easily. The fact that she
even said what she said reminds us that female orgasm is not viewed as reliable.
You wouldn't hear that coming seductively out of a man’s mouth. Am I right? Everyone
knows men can come easily; no one even has to verbalize that.
Given, however, that women during masturbation actually can
orgasm as quickly, easily, and reliably as men can, it’s also another of many indications that our society has the wrong idea about lady-gasms. (Seriously, we as a culture need to get our shit straight about the basics of female orgasm.)
2 Women who do orgasm easily are desirable to men. Our
culture does associate an amply orgasmic woman with sexiness; just look at any
female in porn, romance novels or any number of fictional women like the over-sexed,
orgasm-loudly-and-at-the-drop-of-a-hat Samantha from Sex and the City.
3 If a gal
really, really wanted to impress and seduce a guy, it's not unheard of that she would maybe fib a tiny bit about her orgasm prowess or put on a little more of a gasm-show during the nasty.
I don't know. For me, this character's (and thus the writer's) use of orgasm ability as a way to seem sexy, says something about the roles women play in sexual interactions in order to be what they are expected to be, what they would like to be, or what they think a man would most like. And it also points out how socially accepted those points above are. There is a lot to be discussed on this topic, but for now, just roll all this around in your head for a bit. Would a man ever try to impress a woman by saying he can orgasm easily?. Why does it make sense for a woman to try and impress someone this way - particularly when there is no good evidence to assume different women have different natural abilities to orgasm and that women orgasm as easily as men when we masturbate. Just think a touch on that.
As I said above, this movie is more reflective of our culture's current situation with women and our abilities to orgasm. It doesn't add much in a positive or negative way to orgasm knowledge and orgasm equality. I am going to give this a quite neutral review - 3 out of 5 Vulvas

Free Thinking Feminists Love SSL!
Okay, maybe the title of this post is overstating. The Indianapolis Free Thinking Feminist Group watched Science, Sex, and the Ladies, and some of them said they loved it. So, you know, maybe they were just being nice, and maybe some of them hated it and haven't told me, which is cool and polite and all that.
Seriously though, SSL showed at the lovely Garfield Park Arts Center last night, and there was lots of food and drink and laughs and a really nice discussion that made its way out into the parking lot, but was broken up because mosquito are evil...and work in the morning and all that. My point is, I thought it was a really fun showing, and I think I'll be hearing more from the group as different people have time to kinda ponder it a bit.
This is a group of really thoughtful, fun, interesting and curious men and women, so I put a lot of value into their thoughts. I'll keep you posted as I hear more from them.
Also, we were right next to the "bear tunnel" which led from the old Indianapolis zoo to a little room about 10 feet over where the bears used to hibernate. I didn't know this was a thing that existed.
Also, Rice Krispy Treats are kick ass.
Also, so are cheese balls.
Also, there is a way to arrange seats where everyone can see, and it might not be what you expect.
Also - unicorns, man.

Lady Clitoris and Lord Peter DeCocke at the Indy Pride Parade!
This past Saturday Science, Sex and the Ladies proudly marched in the Indianapolis Pride Parade. We were there to promote our movie, to promote Orgasm Equality for All, and most importantly in support of the Indy LGBT community. Was it fun? Yes, sir. Did we get a lot of love from the parade viewers? You know it! Did our parade formation include the esteemed couple, Lady Clitoris and Lord Peter DeCocke? Why yes it did. Here are some facts about our Indy Pride Parade adventure.

1 Lord Peter DeCocke became nauseous about an hour before the walking began, but heroically pulled his shit together at the last minute and wowed the crowd.
2 Peter DeCock is an actual name of somebody that works at my day job company. It is a large company, so I don't know this man, but I found him by looking up dirty sounding words for fun in the company address book. I also found Thomas Van Ass and one of my all time faves, Virginie Assmat.
3 Science, Sex and the Ladies threw out 1260 pieces of candy including Sour Patch Kids, Starbursts, Twizzlers, Gobstoppers to the spectacular spectators along the route
4 The temperature was around 80 F, which was not as hot as were were fearing. However, even with a nicer temp, you'd think it would get pretty hot in old-timey clothes, but it actually wasn't too bad.

Butler University Magazine and Me
One of my 2 friends from college (Sooory, it's just that I didn't live on campus, so it was hard to meet people - or at least that's what I tell myself.) texted me the other day with the following picture.
That's right, ya'll. Looks like I made it into Butler University Magazine! I had sent them a press kit before our cast preview screening, as I did with several media outlets around Indianapolis. However, they didn't respond at all (like every other place I sent it too except for 1 cool reporter at Nuvo), and it's been a couple months ago, so I hadn't thought about it. I guess they threw it into the "What are these graduates doing now" file and moved on with their lives. So I thought this was fun - and also probably the lamest of all possible pieces of media coverage one could have.
However, I thought I'd just mention ol' Butler University here because Science, Sex and the Ladies includes a strangely large amount of people who went to Butler but didn't meet there. That's why I actually sent the press kit to Butler University Magazine in the first place - because I thought this weird Butler grouping might interest them.
Here's the line-up. I have a Chemistry degree from there. Nathaniel Blume, our composer has a degree in music composition from Butler. Our choreographer, Heidi Keller Phillips, who also acted in the movie, was in the prestigious Butler Ballet program. (Unfortunately, the dance scene that was scored by Nathaniel, lyrics by us at AnC, and choreographed by Heidi didn't make the final cut. It was one of the first parts of the movie we created, and a part I most dearly loved. Sadly, in the end though, it didn't work with the feel of the rest of the movie. Plus we didn't have any experience with creating a musical number up to that point, and we made some mistakes in the shooting and planning that couldn't be overcome in a way we felt completely comfortable with. However, we loved the processes, our collaborators, and musical numbers in general, so there will be another musical number in an AnC movie. Mark my words.) Also, at least 5 of our actors graduated from the Butler performing arts college. Some of the actors definitely knew each other, but other than that, we all just ended up together, and we think it's real sweet.

The Sexual Bomb Dropping Traditions of the Midwest
I like living in Central Indiana. There's lot's of fun, talented, interesting people around. There's stuff to do and good things to eat. Around my house there's probably too many sweet cats that want to be friends, but that's okay. I'm saying this because Indianapolis, Indiana, and the whole Midwest really get a lot of shit. From people in other places, but also from people who live here. The going wisdom is that the Midwest is boring, but honestly everywhere is boring in its own way, and I've always been of the opinion that if you are bored, it's because you are, in fact, a boring person - but that's not what I wanted to discuss.
I just wanted to point out that the Midwest (and Indiana in particular) is a little more avant garde than it gets credit for. Most of the big sexual thought bombs were dropped in these parts, folks. The Kinsey Reports came out of Indiana University where the world renowned Kinsey Institute still resides. The revolutionary physiology of orgasm research from Masters and Johnson was straight out of St. Louis. The recent groundbreaking book (The Case of the Female Orgasm: Bias in the Science of Evolution) about the evolution of female orgasm by Elisabeth Lloyd, is also out of Indiana University.
I'd like to think that making Science, Sex and the Ladies is in this grand tradition, and as such has classically Midwestern content. What can we say? Shakin' up the sexual status quo - that's what we do around here.

My Orgasm Equality Post at BlogHer and Other Things
It's a lovely day here in ol' Indianapolis. I just thought I'd say that cause it's mostly not been lovely days for the past 4 months, so it's a refreshing change and worth saying. Another nice thing that has happened is that a post I did for BlogHer got featured, and a lot of people seem to be reading and sharing it, which I'm pretty much into, ya know? It is about none other than Orgasm Equality (what the hell else would I write about?), and it's got a little perspective switch for you to chew on.
I'll have some more actual posts up soon. I have a lot of SSL reviewing to do. I have Blue is the Warmest Color, Nymphomaniac Vol 1 and 2, House of Cards season 2, Game of Thrones Season 1, 2 and 3. Plus, I have like 50 more in my mind that I need to watch again because I watched them before I was doing SSL Reviews, but I clearly remember a depiction or discussion of female sexual release or masturbation (A Dirty Shame, Monster's Ball - if you have any other's I haven't done yet, let me know). I also need to start watching Girls and reviewing that, I think... Anyway, point is - watch for those post coming up, but for now, travel over and read what I had to say to the BlogHer readership! Check it HERE
Oh- and I Googled images for "Indianapolis" to get a pic for the blog (since I said it was a beautiful day here. Oh, and I tried Googling "beautiful day in Indianapolis" and it was really just wedding pictures), and I liked this one of the Children's Museum. We got ourselves a pretty kickass Children's Museum, BTW.

The Media is a Liar: Props to Melissa Fabello at Everyday Feminism
So, I attend this Free Thinking Feminist discussion group here in Indy. A topic is decided on and people throw up some links to light reading on the topic, and then we get some beer and talk and get off topic, and it's just plain good fun. Thanks to ab fab, scientist/actress/feminist Alicia for turning me on to it.
![]() |
| The media - about female sexual response, of course. Porn, particularly. |
Well, this upcoming topic is - you guessed it - sex. Mac, one of the awesome free thinking feminist, put up a few links for us all to look at, and one caught my attention. It's called "Your First Time: A Sexual Guide for Girls," at Everyday Feminism. It's a good read. I suggest you check out the whole thing. It's a brief but practical discussion of what young people should be exposed to when it comes to sex education. It's largely standard fare for a liberal, thoughtful take on teaching young folk about sex (masturbate, communicate, etc.), but it had one particular section that I thought was particularly noteworthy:
2. Question Your Media Consumption
Growing up, I had a really good understanding of my body. I started masturbating at an early age, and by the time I hit puberty, I knew that this totally-awesome-wow feeling was associated with sex. I felt wise beyond my years. And excited for what was to come.
And then I noticed something.
Pretty much everything that mainstream media – from television and movies to the clips I’d sneak from the Playboy channel, back when ‘A’ and ‘B’ channels existed – told me was that I was doing it wrong.
That my body didn’t belong to me.
That the way that I derived pleasure wasn’t normal.
That I, apparently, needed to make some really contorted facial expressions and loud noises in order to communicate to my partner that I was enjoying myself.
And suddenly, I was kind of freaked out.
Sex, I thought, was nothing like how I imagined it. And I had a whole new script to learn – fast! – before I even attempted to be sexual with another person.
Because, as far as I could tell, that other person would be far less interested in what worked for me and instead would just be waiting for me to act out the expectations that they, too, had received from the media.
Well, shit.
And it wasn’t until I was older, until I’d already had one (two, three, four, five) sexual partners that I realized that I had been right all along, and that those expectations didn’t have to apply to me or my partners.
I realized eventually that I should be looking for partners who were more concerned with my pleasure and enjoyment than with my ability to fuck like a porn star.
Because as it turns out: The media is a liar.
Penetration isn’t where women tend to derive the most pleasure. Semen doesn’t have to be splattered all over my face. I can expect my partners to perform oral sex on me for more than three minutes.
Holy wow.
So check yourself. And understand that just because you saw it on TV (or heard it in a song) doesn’t mean that it’s true.
I like that she highlights the weirdly confusing, dichotomous situation of being a sexual female in this world. I can absolutely relate almost exactly to her experience, and I imagine a lot of other women can relate too - even if just in part. She was a girl that understood her own body and her own orgasm, but ended up ignoring her well-earned knowledge to kinda fit in with what she believed was expected of her. What kind of toxic sexual culture are we ladies brewed in that allows us to willfully ignore what our bodies know; forgoing pleasure and orgasm for years and sometimes lifetimes - and just just accepting it as the way things are.
Let's stop facilitating an environment where it's easy to just accept it, and let's start speaking up. Get with the Orgasm Equality Movement, baby! Maybe, with some honesty and some work, each new generation of girls will benefit from an increasingly sensible, realistic sexual culture, and I give the writer of this article, Melissa A. Fabello big props for her steps in that direction.

Indianapolis International FF 2013!
It's that time of year again here in Naptown. The 2013 Indianapolis International Film Festival is on, baby - July 18-28th. I probably said something like this last year, but I'd like to reiterate it. They curate a good show.
Now, I know a lot of you readers are interested in the whole female sexuality and ladygasm thing, but I think at least some of you are probably also into film and maybe even indie film (and of course some of you just happen upon me once in a while looking for porn).
For those of you who are into indie film, you may get me on this. Have you ever been to a film festival or maybe just to an arts theater to see a real indie movie, and while watching the movie you get so incredibly bored and irritated that you contemplate things like scratching out your eyes with your credit card or simply slashing your own throat to just dear god end it? Well, you're not gonna feel like that much at all in this festival - and if you do it will probably just be one short in a series of 5 or 6 shorts, so it's not really that bad.
I'm a realist, and I'm not going to say you will be amazed by every movie at this film fest. You may even happen upon one that irritates you a bit, but that, in all honesty is the nature of the film festivals. Festivals have lots of movies, and their likability is subjective. The very best a festival can really do is to have a reputation for curating a good, solid line-up, giving the viewer a pretty good chance that she will see something that she likes or even loves. That's the kind of reputation the Indianapolis FF has been growing over the years. I can attest to it, because I play Russian Roulette and randomly go to several movies and shorts programs every year for the last several years. I don't worry about just stepping into a movie I know nothing about, because I trust it will be pretty good, and I recommend if you live around here, that you check one out. Plus, the movies are showing at The Indianapolis Museum of Art. You can enjoy the simply lovely grounds between movies, or if you're there during open hours, check out the art - it's free.

I Love Parades.
I'm going to stray off topic here. Instead of pondering ladyasm depictions in our media or some other crap like I usually do, I'm going to talk about something much more important and close to me heart. Parades. I love a parade. I am a natural critic, so I will critique the hell out of, during and after, but I will always enjoy it, and I will cheer. Oh how I will cheer. I don't care if it's some dude on a tractor with a poster board duct taped to the side or if it's the most beautifully large, sparkly, fluffy cloud float I've ever seen. I will scream accolades at you, because by god, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to entertain me.
So, now that you know my true heart, I can tell you that it was Pride week here in Indy. It involves a fabulous parade - the best we have. (This is where I need to confess that I've never been to the most famous parade in Indianapolis, the 500 Festival Parade that coincides with the Indy 500 race. I don't know why I've never been. I think for years I thought you had to pay to see it. I don't know how that makes sense, but it was always in the back of my head somewhere. That's my only real excuse. I will see it someday, I promise.)
Anyway, I loved the parade, and there were groups that really put in the time to do it up. I have great appreciation for a good solid effort to entertain in a parade. So...I want to give credit where credit is due. These are some photos Charlie caught from the parade. There was other superb stuff, but I wanted to focus on the more homemade endeavors of awesomeness that I noticed - which includes but is not limited to the following. Enjoy.

| It's just a black truck, but I like the way it's fully decked out |

| They got married - and then chased a little wedding cake around |
![]() |
| I love sparkles like nobody's business so...yes on the dress and the disco ball |
![]() |
| How can you make the ol' politician in a convertible schtick fun? Giant Gavel, of course! |
![]() |
| Fabuloso. |
![]() |
| A Unitarian church had a bunch of people in crazy detailed, all pink costumes. I think it was my favorite effort of the parade. There are a few examples below. |
![]() |
| You should have seen under the skirt |
![]() |
| Like I said, the more sparkles the better in my opinion |
![]() |
| Feathers? yes. |
![]() |
| so much can be done with beads and knitting |
![]() |
| The head piece was made out of all these spools of pink thread and yarn. There was a lot going on in this one. |
![]() |
| Even had a little pink vacuum. That's what I'm talking about, people - details. |
![]() |
| And well, I just liked looking at this one. (Although I thought standing on a moving car with no helmet or anything to hold on to was excessively dangerous) |

Motus Dance - LIKDIT!
Well, my friends, it's time for a new installment of LIKDIT! In case you're new here, this is a slightly different-from-SSL-norm series I do, and it stands for "Ladies I
Know Doing Interesting Things!" I pronounce it
as "liked it!" and, quite importantly, I always say it in a way that one can clearly
tell there's an exclamation point at the end. Here's the lowdown. LIKDIT! women have to be people I know personally, not just any ol' gal I read about. Also, they have to be doing something sort of open to the pubic, something that is more than a job or a business, or some personal awesomeness. I gotta have rules. Otherwise, I would just have too many women in my life to include. No, it must be something more purely creative or philanthropic in nature, and she/they have to be putting themselves out there.
Which brings me to Ms. Heidi Keller Phillips and the women of Motus Dance. Motus debuted in 2003, and they've grown into a thriving little bright point of dance here in Indy over the last 10 years. I actually met Heidi around that time Motus began. She auditioned and got the part as "Woman" in a short we were doing called Embolism. So, I've kind of watched Motus grow up. Heidi was a core artist at the time, but she became the director a few years ago when the original director, a fine woman herself, went off to pursue other interests more full time. They have classes, workshops, and a full schedule of shows throughout the year, which frankly, I love watching. Now, as I say in these LIKDIT!s often, I'm no expert or professional critic. I don't know nothin' about no dancin' or no dancers. I just like what I like. The dancers choreograph and create their events from the bottom up. The performances are unique, lovely, and sometimes pretty eery, plus the costume and music choices are always superb, and often unexpected. Oh - and in the past few years, they have really figured out how to create lovely lighting that compliments the pieces and enhances the whole experience. That is kinda big in my opinion because much like sound is often neglected in indie movies, from my perspective lighting often seems neglected in indie dance and performances. They're the whole package, folks.
So, here's to the ladies of Motus Dance! I thought this was a good time for their LIKDIT! because they are holding their yearly event, Pairing, in a couple weeks (The evening of June 8th to be exact). It's pretty cool - kinda like a relaxed gourmet dinner, but during each course you get to watch a dance piece inspired by the wine you're being served. So you get wine, dance, fancy appetizers prepared by awesome local chefs, and lots of fab guests to mingle and get drunk on wine with. Go HERE for more info. Also, check this Motus promotional piece. It's quite lovely if you ask me - and created by our own Charles Borowicz (one of our Science, Sex and the Ladies directors, as I'm sure you know).
