Well, the cast and crew screening of Science, Sex and the Ladies was last night, so this marks the end of my blog once a day post marathon. I know you'll miss me, but I'll be back 2 or 3 times a week. Also, more good news...the screening went really well. I mean it's cast and crew, so they are a lot of people we know, and they're gonna be at least polite. So, I realize we may not be getting the whole story, but I'll tell you what, people were really excited about it. I got texts and emails from 5 different people on their way home letting me know about ideas they had for more group showings. We are encouraging people to share the movie in small groups anywhere from their own homes to art galleries to meeting halls to bars. Anyway, it looks like we may have some coming up including a "silent screening" and the first SSL Dude screening. So I feel pretty happy about the whole thing. I'll keep you posted about how the small screenings are going. Till we meet again...

Posters for May First Friday!

Well, tomorrow is First Friday again here in Indy. That means we're putting up some Science, Sex and the Ladies posters around the gallery areas where people will be walking. Charlie whipped these out yesterday. I really like them, and I think we'll stick with this concept for a while. The photos are a mixture of stills from the movie, portraits of actors in character, and behind the scenes stuff. It's just fun, kinda intriguing things that have to do with the movie. There are plenty, plenty more that can be made, and I'm looking forward to seeing what ol' CBruv comes up with.
So, if you're out and about, particularly in the Fountain Square area, keep an eye out for the posters - oh and please enjoy -I think it's going to be a super nice spring night for the Indianapolis May First Friday!

So, Science, Sex and the Ladies is, well, like 95% done. It's all edited; the insane amount of compositing is finished; sound effects and credits are all done, and the score is written. We will be recording the score in February and getting a final sound sweetening, but other than that the movie is done. Well, that was until we looked at it again a couple weeks ago, and just could no longer abide by a small part in the early movie. It always bothered us, but suddenly, it just seemed like it dragged the movie down in an unacceptable way. So, we did the only thing we could; we threw together a bad-ass re-shoot in about 10 days. It was merely a 3 minute scene, but it pulled the first part of the movie together better than we even hoped for. The even better part was that we shot this in a real set (created in Barnaby's living room), so didn't have any green screen post work to do.

The scene took place at slumber party in the late 80's, with mom and dad having a frank discussion with the girls about the physiology of a female orgasm. Alicia Walker, Elle Beals, and Emma Weber all played our slumber partiers. I got to be the mom, and Barnaby got to be the Dad. Sarah Murrell was our spectacular (and I really truly mean that) make-up artist. Mr. Jake Fritz boomed for us, and our nephew Drake joined us as much needed additional crew.

This was a fun shoot, not just because of the sweet 80's stylings, but because the people were great. Thanks to all our cast and crew. This is the actual, truly true, final shoot for SSL, and you all made it a great one! Enjoy the pics.

Latest Round of Movie Fixes...Done.

I'm feeling pretty good. We just finished the latest round of edits, reshoots, fix-ups. We had a giant list of these things up on the wall - it consisted of 22 8x11 papers taped together behind the editing desk. The items are all marked off, and we just took a look at the movie - all put together - a couple nights ago. (Without some insane and stupid hardware issues that Charlie had to work through, it would have been a couple weeks before, but hey - that's the movie makin' life.)  

Anyway, we were really happy with all the changes. It feels like a real movie, and I have to give Charlie some major props here. He's the the one really doing the effects work, and I'm just gonna say, it's pretty bad-ass stuff. Obviously, there's not action or explosions like one would think of when thinking about effects, but pretty much the entire movie is an effect. It's almost all green screen - for one. Frankly though, it looks like there aren't a lot of effects in it - which I think is the best possible situation. Effects shouldn't look like effects. 

Now, the movie does have a really weird, stylized aesthetic that we've all been worried about pulling off, but after watching the movie, I'm super excited about it. This version is now in the hands of our kick-ass composer, and we'll be working more closely with him in the next month. We still have some small corrections and pep-ups for the movie, but it's barely a speck compared to what we've done.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day, so I thought this would be a good time to let all my readers know what a kick ass mom I have. (She wouldn't have approved of me saying that 20 years ago, but she's not too worried about my cursing these days.)

 It's not just that my mom believes in me and isn't ashamed that her daughter is making a documentary about female sexuality...or that she brought food and pretty table clothes to the big SSL cast costuming event where she and her sister, my fantastic aunt Faf, helped me figure out how to costume the era stuff...or that she also brought food to one of our big shoots...or that she and my dad showed up to be extras in the 70's era scene depicting a 'porn conference that never was'...or that she watched my nephews while my sister and brother-in-law were acting for us...or that she walked around our cast party amiably wearing the ice-breaker name-tag that included the definition of clitoris.

It's so much more than that. It's as big as the time and energy she put into me and my sister. It's as small as the itty bitty beak glued to the little yellow cotton ball from some long ago school art project sitting in an egg that she puts out every Easter for me to kiss. I know you're not in love with computers, mom, but if you happen to read this, please remember everyday how proud I am of you and how lucky I feel.

To my sister, my sister-in-laws, my aunts, my cousins, our cast members and friends out there raising children...as Tupac says, "Keep Ya Head Up," cause that shit ain't easy, but it is crazy important, and all my love goes out to you this weekend and always.

Thank you to the friends and family that came out to shoot re-do scenes this Sunday and Monday. Love to ya'll!!!! We are so close to finishing this thing. We've received the funding for the sound finishing and music recording (thanks you, thank you again to our Kickstarter Campaign supporters). Also, a few months ago, Charlie, Barnaby, and I went through the whole movie scene by scene and picked it apart. So, we've been working through corrections, changes, and re-dos for the movie since then. When we are finished - we're talking beginning of May here. We will send it off to our composer, who will start working in more detail on the compositions. Anyway, part of the changes included re-shooting 2 scenes. The final scene of the movie was just a big monologue before. It was kinda boring and somber, so we cut a little out, spread the lines around, and tried to create the feeling that it was the people behind the movie talking to the audience as opposed to actors saying lines to the audience. The scene is filled with the real people who actually do support the aim of the movie, and it's kinda personal with family and friends in there. We shot this at our our Anderson, IN set-up. Thanks Central Cabinet for the space!

The scene we re-did on Monday was just bad before (which is why we decided to re do it), but this time we cut stuff out and turned the voice over into an on-screen narrator. This scene opens and closes the section of the movie about porn. The onscreen narrator is a porn star who talks to us from her porn set just before she begins the porn shoot, and then also talks to us while relaxing after. Ervin Gainer was our male porn star, and made for a beautiful addition to the set. We actually did shoot this in a hotel.

The weekend shoot went better than we could have imagined. I mean there were issues we had to deal with - a ground loop coming through the boom, a point at the end of the day where Charlie suddenly thought we had lost all the sound recording (we didn't, but even the thought was pretty traumatizing)...and there was the fact that the actors had to see me and Barnaby in skin-tight morph suits. Honestly, other than that, everything got done as it was supposed to. We worked the hell out of our hair and make-up ladies (Lauren Bertelson and Rosalind Ferris), but as you can see from the pics below, they did a fantastic job, and the movie would not be the same without them. The actors were great too, nailin' lines right and left and rockin' the non-verbal acting. Even our good buddy Jake Fritz was helping crew the first part of the day. Thanks to all of you!

We spent all Saturday before hauling everything up there, hanging the green and the white screen, organizing the lighting - plus we shot a scene (using our Doc Johnson props) that day too. So, we spent all day Saturday and Sunday in production mode (which was actually kind of fun after being in post-production mode for so long), and got a total of 4 scenes completely shot. Two of these scenes - the ones we needed our new family of actors to be in - had been a nagging burden for a long time. We had these worked out visually before the first round of shooting in 2009, but they didn't involve actors. Then our ideas got less and less interesting to us and the work involved seem ridiculous. Then all the sudden festival submission time was approaching, so we had to decide on a approach quick-style, and honestly it was better than anything we had come up with before...and after watching the actors during shooting, we were all even more excited about how these scenes were turning out than we thought we'd be. I love it.  I'll leave you with some pics from the weekend. Enjoy!

Gearing Up For Festival Submissions This Month

We are actually getting close, people. We have a late September deadline we're working toward to get this movie submitted into its first festival. It will be an unfinished submission - which is very common. There won't be final sound or credits, and the music will be a temp track. Which, by the way, the awesome Nathaniel Blume will be working out for us. He's the guy that composed (and managed recording of) the movie's opening number, "Shitty Perspective." If you didn't happen to be a dancer in this movie and thus had to memorize the words and dance to that song, you may know it as the song playing under our trailer - although without most of the vocals. He'll be doing the final score from his home base in LA, but is also helping us out to make the temp track. He's awesome, and we're excited to be working with him - I'll leave it at that for now.

We currently have 14 of the 55 scenes in this movie left to finish. It sounds worse than it is, really, because most of those 14 scenes are at least partly finished. However, it is nothing to scoff at either. We have a strict schedule, we're meeting every other day to asses needs, and we're doing really well so far -ahead of our schedule actually.

Honestly I'm flipping out a little. I have truly been working on this movie my whole adult life. I began the research right as I was finishing college. I put out the first insanely long, rambling, pre-script about 2 years later in 2004ish, and AnC began in earnest really visualizing the script in, I think, about 2007. Shot everything the spring and early summer of 2009, and here we are. It almost doesn't seem real to be this close. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you all know that after all these years of us talking about and working on this, it's gettin' done, baby.

SSL Play Review? Don We Now our Gay Apparel

Well who knew I'd SSL Review a play, and more importantly, who knew anyone actually read my blog and would ask me to do so? Being that I was excited for a new blogging endeavor, and that our own Science Sex and the Ladies actor Dave Charles was cast in this play, I decided to check out Don We Now Our Gay Apparel at Indy's own Theatre on the Square. You too can check it out thru December 18th. (P.S. I love that you can take the beer, wine, and snacks from concessions into the play with you at this theatre.)

If you love sparkly things, 3 saucy singing drag queens ( from Orient Bar), and raunchy Christmas humor, then this is the show to see (if you don't - then go check out Handel's Messiah at Clowes Hall for your Christmas entertainment instead). Charlie and I both thoroughly enjoyed the show, and on a side note, were impressed at the up to the minute jokes. For instance, the Glee parody referenced the recent revelation that Rachel cheated on Finn - OMG. The Glee parody was pretty dead on in a lot of ways, and if you watch Glee, you gotta love that part. My only problem was that for about 5 minutes I thought the person playing Sue Sylvester, the abrasive cheer coach, was supposed to be Sam Evans, the pretty little blond boy. This reminded me of an article I read in Bitch Magazine about the Justin Bieber haircut also being a lesbian hair icon. Without the obvious difference in height - a Sue Sylvester wig looks too much like a Justin Bieber-ish teenage boy - that's all I'm sayin.

Costuming "Science Sex and the Ladies": hoarding, intentions, constraints, and sizing super powers

I've been staring at vintage (and/or crappy old)clothes on hangers laying in large stacks on my garage floor. They are also in the office closet, in the "gray room" with all our equipment and until recently in the back of our van. They've been laying in stacks in various places since we finished shooting in August 2009. I am notoriously a person that does not keep things. I appreciate a card, but I generally read it and then throw it directly away. If I find something in the closet and I haven't used it in a year, it's gone. I can't seem to get rid of these clothes though.

It's not sentimental. I think what it is is that I was scarred slightly by the process of costuming that movie. I spent so much time (and a fair amount of money) on costuming. I was constantly either researching (albeit - thin web researching) period fashion, making Excel sheets of costume needs, searching stores - particularly thrift stores, organizing and tagging costume combos, lugging stacks of them around, making fits, and all the damn ironing and steaming - oh the ironing and steaming. And, it's not like I wasn't already in scheduling, prop, and shoot day hell. I guess my problem is that I am, for the first time, saying to myself something that goes through other people's heads all the time, "but I might need these some day." I won't. I know that, but I keep thinking maybe we'll use them in another movie, or maybe we'll have some sort of promotional event where the actors are in their costumes from this movie. Don't worry, I will eventually throw them out. The truth is if we make another movie the costumes I have will certainly not only be wrong, but not fit any of the actors we have, and let's get real - even when the actors were in them during the shoots, they usually only fit due to safety pins.

I'm not going to lie. We had a rather sleepless week putting together all the final details. Charlie didn't sleep overnight on Wednesday, but luckily everything was done in plenty of time, and we all got some sleep Thursday night so we could be fresh for the big shin-dig. It was really nice to see all the cast again. It was probably different for us to see them than it was for them to see us. They have been going about their lives for 9 months. We have too, but we've also been staring at images of them most days during that 9 months, so in maybe a creepy kind of way, they feel like super special friends that we've been chillin' and illin' with all year - yet they don't know about it.
Anyway, my point is that we loved talking to those crazy actors. We had a lovely time, and the clips we showed seemed to go over well. What more could we ask from this event?

Previewing Select Scenes

So our first official screening event for Science Sex and the Ladies is coming up this Friday. It's a bit exciting and scary because I've been thinking and talking and working on this movie for almost 8 years, and now the product is emerging. Now, granted this is not "the movie." This is select scenes and a trailer for the movie. However, we still have to make a good showing of it.
We’re viewing this as the movie's coming out party. Of course this is a cast party of sorts, but we figured why not hit two birds with one stone. Why not use this to kick off the marketing campaign? We invited a variety of “influential” individuals. That sounds a little silly, but what we mean is people from different “crowds” who may talk (hopefully favorably) about this to friends and colleagues. We also sent invites to all our local press contacts and to some local art and/or culture bloggers. We want to place this movie on people's radar. The point is not to get pre-event press, or even after event press. In fact they don’t even have to come (although we hope everyone will).  The point is to make it known that our movie exists, is progressing, and seems kinda intriguing. It’s like a first little tap on the shoulder. Later, as the movie progresses, we’ll be trying to specifically elicit press and/or collaborations, and when we do, at least it won’t seem like we’re coming out of left field.

April 16th cast party at White Rabbit Cabaret

Last year we shot our first scene with Miss Samantha Borowicz on April 17th. So in a way it's fitting that our cast party is almost a year to the day of our first shoot. We originally thought it would happen in September, then February, and for a while now we've been thinking mid April. Now we actually have a date, and I'm super excited because we have a deadline and this is gonna happen. I assume the cast is excited because it's been a long time since we wrapped shooting. They're a wonderful and patient bunch though (on and off set), so they never complained (to me at least).

I'm also excited because it will be at White Rabbit Cabaret which just opened up in Fountain Square. In fact it's so new, it hasn't even had its grand opening yet - that will be coming soon. One of our fantastic dancers from the movie (dancing excellently to our opening number "Shitty Perspective"), Debra Silveus, is one of the owners of the White Rabbit Cabaret. I went to check it out and talk about the cast party this past Thursday, and I have to say that I was really impressed. It looks really nice in there. The stage is huge with great lighting. The place has great decorating touches like fantastic antique couches for your sitting pleasure. It's just really cool. I also was able to see a sneak peak of their house show this past Saturday. Debra and 3 other dancers (one, Heidi Keller Phillips, who also happens to be a cast member/dancer/choreographer in our movie) performed some sweet ass stuff. By stuff I mean dances that are contemporary with burlesque and cabaret influence (maybe that's not the exact correct description, but it's the best I can do with almost no dance background). They each had a variety of great cabaret outfits, pseudo names, and individual stage personas. Loved it. They looked great, danced great, and I had a great time. I suggest you head down there for a show on or after their grand opening.

Anyway, point being on Friday, April 16th at White Rabbit Cabaret, we're going to have a kick ass cast party where we are showing select scenes from the movie, and we can't wait. Invites are going out this week.

Thanksgiving - A little late

We're a little late on this since the appropriate holiday for this has already passed, but I thought I'd write about a couple things AnC is thankful for - well thankful for in relation to this movie at least.


1. Cast and Crew

We recently sent out questionnaires to all the cast and crew so we could get some info about them for their pages on the Science Sex and the Ladies website. Barnaby is putting together the bios, and after he read the first few he mentioned that he missed everyone, and we all reminisced about those crazy people that for some reason decided to work with us.
The truth is we had very little money, no fame, we were shooting all the way up in creepy warehouse in Anderson, and frankly - it wouldn't have been crazy to think we were tricking them into shooting a nasty, low budget porno - but they showed up anyway.


2. Digital
Strange to say now, since everything is digital, but when AnC first started making movies in late high school and early college (gems, these movies were), we were shooting on SuperVHS and editing from VCR to VCR. There were no consumer digital cameras. Let's just say, things shot on VHS look like they are shot on VHS. The only real option to make a quality movie was to use film - which is super crazy expensive. Luckily, during college, movie quality digital cameras started becoming relatively affordable. We hatched a plan to save and buy a Canon XL1. We now have a new baby that shoots in HD, but our first born digital camera will always be close to our hearts. It was sold 2 years ago to a couple shooting wedding videos in Rhode Island.

3. Mild Spring Weather
The first shoot for this movie was fairly cold (especially for Chris West and Brandi Payton who had to sit half naked on a pedestal with a fan blowing directly on them...sorry about that you two). The last couple shoots were pretty hot (especially for the dancers in layered clothing busting a move in 80 some degree weather with lights beating down on them...sorry about that too, but I didn't enjoy it either. I realized later I has a 102 degree fever that day). The days in between were just right though. In the past we have shot in some of the hottest and bitterly cold places I could imagine, Since we were shooting in a non heated or cooled warehouse, we tried to plan this in mild weather. In the long years and months of pre-production we were never sure if we could get to the shooting part at the right time, but somehow the stars aligned, and we got about the best weather period we could hope for.

Scene 39 Rough cut

Here is a screenshot from the newest scene to get a good rough in. The words might change in content and form in the final version. Scene 39 deals with sexual education and the particular points that make it less useful and even useless in some instances for women. The happy couple here is Ben Aaron and Michele Morones. We shot this on our second green screen we built. We had learned a lot from our first one (which worked great) and we were able to make use of the largest room in our shooting space for this long walk (about 145 feet). It turned out really nice.  We hope to have a complete rough cut in the next week or week and half then we can start talking about pickup shots, music, and the future!

70 minutes rough!

Hey guys, I'm giving Trisha a break from blogging this week. She's been making a lot of posts about things related to Science, Sex and the Ladies, but what about the actual movie? Well, I'm here to give you an update. We have 70 minutes of rough cut footage. It looks like the rough cut is going to come in somewhere around 100 minutes. Its been really fun reliving all the exciting days on set as I build each of these scenes. I feel like our actors brought something that wasn't in the script everytime they were on camera, and I'm making a lot of use of that. This is an extremely information filled movie and its easy for it to get bogged down under a lot of Voice Over, and Explanation. The cure, I always thought, was creating interesting ways to impart that information, while maintaining a strong visual theme, that is supported by interesting characters who are fun but authoritive. Our actors have really helped us get to that point.

We recently recorded VO for our "Happy Hand" scene. Cathy Hammaker, who we have worked with before in our MD Hearts Series as Martinique ( a vengeful fencer and EX lover of Evan Evans who later plans to develop a WMDB "Weapon of Mass Destruction Bomb" in MD Hearts 4 which is my personal favorite of the MD Hearts Episodes although watch them all at ancmovies.com) was excellent. Recording for an animation was a first for us, and we're excited to have finished the first step in bringing the "Happy Hand" to life.

Web Site Thoughts

We're all -well Barney, Jake, and I - are coming up with ideas to add into the future sciencesexandtheladies.com website. We'll figure how it should navigate, name buttons, write everything that will be written and write directions so that later Charlie can just read, copy and past when he's making up the site. This way he'll just have to deal with the hellish, horrible issues involved in the actual making of the website. Being a non-profession, never trained, website-making self learner, makes it horrible, I'm not lying about that. In fact there will be some irrational screaming at the computer as if it were actually an evil person actively trying to ruin his life, but in the end he makes it work, and makes it look pretty cool. Plus, he's free, and he probably won't destroy that much in the process.

The website now is just the audition info - which as you might imagine - is a bit useless and out of date. But, oh, it will be beautiful one day...oh it will be lovely. I'm working on the cast page. It's pretty fun remembering all the different characters the actors played. If you are an actor reading this start thinking about links or any info you want up on your page cause I'll eventually be asking for it.

I'm supposed to have another website idea all written out for our next meeting, but I haven't thought of what that might be. I heard someone is doing Science Sex and the Ladies Mad Libs - and he better have some done...Jake. Or Barnaby  -I can't remember which one of you was supposed to do that right now.

An Update and Some Movie Stills

So far a little over half the movie has been rough edited. Some scenes are more finished than others. Since most of this movie was shot in front of green screen, the sets are, of course, added in, and they are slowly becoming as we planned. The best way, but maybe not a completely correct way to say it is that the sets are to look as if the actors are in a strange stage show. Sometimes the actors are standing in front of what looks like huge screen prints of a set. Sometimes the sets are a sort of layered photo-realistic collage. Sometimes the sets look like a community theater stage.  Here are a few stills from the movie so far.

We're Still Here and Still Working - A Quick Update

It might seem like we've dropped off the face of the earth, but we are in fact still here on earth. We had slowed down a bit the past month. Between the 3 of us we had family weddings, out of town and out of country family visiting, plus we took some time to sleep and catch up with the in-town family and friends we haven't really seen since the beginning of spring. We've also been cleaning up the warehouse and organizing the insane amount of props and costumes we have accumulated. Thanks to the garage sale initiated by Melissa and Stephanie's (two of our esteemed actresses and friends), we made some good money selling some of the more useless props and costumes. The garage sale money will go towards the cast party. That's right, we have not forgotten about the cast party. In fact we're pretty excited about it, and we'll have a date shortly. It is, obviously, going to be much later than we anticipated, but that just means it will be better.

So to wrap up...
1. We've done our post-shoot resting, and we're back to full force
2. Look for an email in the next week or two with some cast party info (that is if you are part of the cast or crew)
and
3. We will not leave you this long without a blog again. We promise we will be better to you.

Some tidbits

Well, we got our grant in the mail and it only cost us one all nighter. We pushed through and got a very rough cut of about 20 minutes of footage together. We did polish up a few minutes though and I thought I would share a couple screen grabs of that footage. The keys are pulling pretty well and it's actually going a bit faster than Charlie expected.

So now you can see the look we're going for. The background has a sort of stagey feel. The floor and the background are distinct, more like a stage with a backdrop, but just a little more. The background looks like a backdrop and not like a photo real environment. There's going to be camera movement and everything else added soon and hopefully I'll be able to get a few clips up here for you to see.
