The Americans Season 5 - The SSL Review

The Americans Season 5
As I've said before, I LOVED the Americans. Unfortunately the series is over now. It ended as well as I could imagine though, so it still stands as one of my very favorite TV series. Plus, although not always perfect, it went a bit above and beyond in my opinion with how it depicted female orgasm, sexuality and gender.  Anyway, there were no SSL reviewable scenes in Season 6, but there were 2 in Season 5 - both in episode 5.

As you know, only depiction or discussion of female orgasm and/or female masturbation and/or the clit are eligible for SSL Review. Nothing else counts, including plain 'ol sex if it doesn't include anything listed above. I specifically critique the realism (for instance, were the physical things happening to that women while she orgasmed things that could realistically cause orgasm for a woman?) and also speak on what the depiction/discussion reflects from and adds to the larger cultural discussion around lady-gasms and female sexuality.

You can see all the SSL TV Reviews HERE (and as always you can find all the movie SSL Reviews HERE).

The lady-on-top
The scene begins with Philip having sex with a woman. It's spy stuff, so he's just getting the job done. Normally he's pretty damn focused on these types of tasks, but in this we see he's particularly disengaged. We see a bust shot of him above her in missionary clearly pushing his dick in and out of her. We can't see what's going on with their bodies much below the shoulders, but it's clear that there are no hands doing any work near the clit/vulva area.

We also see her as he's banging her. She has her eyes closed and seems to be enjoying it - although I wouldn't say she is being depicted as near orgasm. Philip is looking down on her with such lack of interest in what he is doing that it seems almost robotic.

It then cuts to a memory of him as a child. Clearly he is poor and starving and his dad brings home what appears to be 3 rocks (for real - I really don't know what this food thing is) that his mom heats up and gives to the family to eat.

It cuts back to Philip and the woman in bed, but this time he's on his back. The camera is looking down on him and immediately the woman falls forward into frame with a quick orgasmic yelp as if in the last moment of her orgasm. She then rolls off him and breaths into recovery next to him. Clearly time had passed and they had changed positions during the Russia flashback, and she was riding him cowgirl style when she came.

My Thoughts (the SSL Review)
There is not enough shown to see where all 4 hands were or how she was having intercourse with him. Was she laying so her pelvis was pressed close against him so she could grind the clit/vulva area against his pelvis while he was inside her? Was she or he using one of their offscreen hands to rub the clit? I don't know. Now, Philip does still look very disengaged the moment before she slumps forward in orgasm, but if you know his character, he doesn't need to be engaged with this kind of thing to be doing the right thing to get the right results (stimulating her clit to make her come). There's no indication he was doing that, but no indication he wasn't either.

Anything could have been happening. In one way I appreciate that this was not a depiction of a lady-gasm during intercourse that was clearly unrealistic. It wasn't a classic scene where a woman just gets banged, where we see for sure there was no additional clit/vulva stimulation - either through hands/vibrators or deliberate close grinding of the clit/vulva against something. So I can't knock the scene. There truly could have been clit/vuvla stimulation we didn't see.

On the other hand, nobody in the world thinks as deeply and rewatches scenes like this so closely for that kind of information except me. Most people probably just see this scene as a woman that came while bouncing on top of a dude, and that's not exactly the progressive lady-gasm depiction I hope for.

And honestly, people have a weird idea about lady-on-top intercourse because sexperts, and especially feminist ones, often say that lady-on-top is the best sex position for the female orgasm because she can control the movements.

That's kind of true, but it misses the point. Getting an orgasm during intercourse is somewhat about being in control of the movements, but only because the heart of it is that the clit/vulva area gets consistent, appropriate stimulation and being in control of the movement helps achieve that. That very integral part of why a woman needs to control the movement is left out and so it is confusing, and I think sometimes misleading. People often think about it as the woman being able to control how the penis moves inside her against her vaginal canal - and that's maybe nice for her comfort and fun, but stimulation inside the vaginal canal - however you're doing it, is not going to cause orgasm. Point is - because as a culture we simply don't get that a woman needs clitoral/vuvla stimulation to orgasm and think that a penis moving inside the vagina can cause a woman to orgasm - it's sensible to assume that a woman on  top during sex can 'get her orgasm' by controlling the way a penis moves in the vagina. However that's unrealistic BS.

What we should really be saying is that any sexual position that allows a woman to control how and when her clit/vulva is getting good, consistent stimulation, is a good position for female orgasm during intercourse...you know, to be clear about what's really going on.

The Vulva Rating
I'd love to give this a better rating because I love this show and because I want to give it the benefit of the doubt based on past depictions, but I shouldn't. In reality this was a depiction of a lady-gasm with very little context of how it happened except that they were having intercourse and she was on top. It's not bad, but it's also not good. There is nothing progressive from this depiction and if anything it just reinforces basic cultural assumptions about women being able to come from intercourse alone.

I'm giving this a 3 vulva rating for keeping it status quo, but with no ill intent or depictions that were specifically unrealistic.

The Americans Season 4: The SSL Review

The Americans Season 4
As I've said before, I LOVE the Americans, and I'm about to watch Season 5 finally, so I thought I should finally SSL Review Season 4. There were 2 SSL Reviewable scenes in this season and both included a woman coming during intercourse in missionary style. One is slightly more realistic in my opinion, but we'll get to that.

S4 Episode 5: Solid Missionary Depiction

In this scene the main characters, Philip and Elizabeth, have sex in bed. They are in a missionary-ish position when the lady-gasm occurs. It's shot mostly from bed level looking towards their bodies from the top of their heads (see the last 30 seconds in the clip below), but we can't really see anything but their heads and upper chests because they are tightly pressed together and their bodies block their torsos, hips and legs from view.

So, I can't really say what was happening in the pelvic region at the time she orgasms. Clearly they were meant to be having intercourse, and as you know intercourse alone would not realistically cause a woman to orgasm given that there is no physical evidence in scientific literature showing that stimulation inside the vagina without additional external clitoral stimulation has ever caused orgasm.

However, it is completely possible for a woman to have an orgasm during intercourse if she is able to get enough stimulation on her clitoral/vulva area. Obviously that can be done with hands or vibrator placed down there, but it can also be done if she is able to grind against her partner or the bedding or what-have-you in such a way that the ol' clit gets enough stimulation to take her over the edge. I don't accept this grinding possibility is happening in sex scenes unless I see active bodily movement from the woman and feel there are body parts or bedding continuously (and that doesn't mean intermittently during banging situations) pressed up against the vulva area during the intercourse. Only then will I accept it's possible that the woman is getting consistent enough pressure and stimulation to realistically orgasm.

So, that's what I need to see in order to entertain the possibility that the fictional woman's orgasm is depicted in a realistic way: consistent pressure against clit/vulva area and active bodily movement from the woman. I think it's a fair assessment. I mean, if I saw a depiction of a dude that came from a woman moving her head back and forth in front of his penis, only touching the tip with her lips intermittently each time her head ended up back at the penis, then I would say that was pretty silly. Maybe if he was crazy horny it could happen as a fluke, but just like a dude banging a woman and maybe having his body intermittently pushing up against her vulva/clit during each thrust, it's just not likely, people. Females need consistent clit stim and males need consistent penile stimulation. It's simple really.

Anyway, this scene hit the mark. Like I said, I couldn't see their lower bodies, but judging from their upper bodies, they were pressed together pretty tightly and consistently, so that satisfies one of my conditions. The other condition gets a check mark too because Elizabeth was grabbing his body and moving her core kinda desperately, and to me, even though I couldn't see the lower parts, it was enough to assume she very easily could be grinding like a motha fucker against him. I love that because it's realistic enough, but I also just like seeing women's bodies actively moving during sex. We are often depicted not moving at all while a dude bangs into us, and that sucks because we need depictions that help model actual ways women might orgasm during intercourse, and laying still ain't one of them.

S4 Episode 9: Loud Come
So this is another missionary sex scene where the woman orgasms, but this just isn't as good a depiction as the one above. It's two Russians, Oleg and Tatiana, but I sometimes call them Russian Pete Campbell (because his personality kinda reminds us of Pete Campbell on Mad Men) and Russian Miranda July (because she looks the tiniest bit like Miranda July). She's super loud and vocal about it because it's a thing with them. He's rich and lived in homes with walls thick enough to be loud during sex in his youth, and she was poor and had paper thin walls in her apartments. Now, she's in a place with sensibly thick walls. So, she's specifically loud. It's cool. I get it. it makes sense, and it's not a fake porny depiction.

Other than that, it's just basic intercourse sex. He was close down on her, which is good, so her vulva/clit area may be getting consistently pressed upon, but she doesn't seem to be moving her body much, and so I don't buy that there would really be a sufficient amount of appropriate clit stimulation there if she's not actively making that happen with her own body. Really, it just looks like every other sex scene you'll ever see. He fucks her...she comes...and we are left to assume that intercourse in and of itself is as orgasmic for females as it is for males...and that's just not true. Her coming in that situation is simply not that realistic, but it's also super status quo, so it's not super egregious.

Oleg and Tatiana

The Vulva Rating
I liked the depiction of the Philip-Elizabeth orgasm because their bodies were such that she could have been consistently pressed up against him and grinding the whole time, and that could realistically get a woman her orgasm. The Tatiana-Oleg one was a bit too status quo though. I'll give this season a mixed review of 3 1/2 vulvas.

The Americans S2 and S3: The SSL Review

The Americans Season 1
As I've said before, I LOVE the Americans, so I'm gong to continue my SSL Reviewing. This time I have one scene from Season 2 that is not technically SSL Reviewable but I like it anyway and another from Season 3 that is still not strictly eligible, but more so. Either way, I like these scenes and I think they are relevant to this blog.

These are the only depiction or discussion of female orgasm and/or masturbation in the second and third season, and as you know those are the specific things I review. I critique the realism (for instance, were the physical things happening to that women while she orgasmed things that could realistically cause orgasm for a woman?) and also speak on what the depiction/discussion reflects from and adds to the larger cultural discussion around lady-gasms and female sexuality.

You can see all the SSL TV Reviews HERE (and as always you can find all the movie SSL Reviews HERE).

Season 2 Ep 1 - mom and dad in the act
This is just a little scene where a daughter is curious about her parents' whereabouts and thinks they might not actually be in their room in the middle of the night, but when she opens the door to look, she finds them (Elizabeth and Philip - the main character Russian spies living as normal American parents...even their children don't know) naked and 69ing and quickly closes the door.

So, they are laying horizontal on the bottom end of the bed, both on their sides, head to crotch obviously, and facing each other. We see only a few seconds of this, but we can see that she is gently moving her head right at his crotch area, and we see his head pop up from being sandwiched between her legs.

There is no actual depiction or discussion of female orgasm or masturbation, thus it not being technically SSL reviewable, but hot damn, I love this scene. A child catches her parents in the act, and it's not just straight up intercourse? Um, yes. I like it for a few different reasons

1 It's just not that often that we see a married couple doing anything except for intercourse...and since intercourse is great for male orgasm and not for female orgasm...seeing more sexual acts on TV that ARE good for female orgasm is also good for orgasm equality.
2 It reflects a certain parity in Elizabeth and Philip's relationship; a sort of equal appreciation given that 69ing is beautifully orgasmic for both partners in a way that intercourse is not. This show, I think, takes the details and implications and realities of sexual encounters into consideration in its stories. It doesn't just write "sex scene" in the script and do whatever comes to mind first. I feel like that's what a lot of writing teams end up doing. There is often very little thought put into sex scenes and they end up stale and status quo, and since status quo also means misunderstanding how women physically orgasm, it's also usually unrealistic, clunky in the story, and bad for orgasm equality.
3 Because 69ing is a little more "freaky" in this penetration obsessed world, it's a little grosser of a thing to see your parents doing - which on a pure story level I also appreciate.

So, I can only assume these two were in the middle of a sex act with the intention of orgasming, and I think we can all agree that mouths on each other's genitals (clit and penis area to be exact) is a valid way both men and women could orgasm, so I deem this realistic and good for the world to boot.

Season 3 Ep 13 - one lady's story
So in this episode there is a scene in a self-help sort of group, and the class is called "Sex Expression is Self Expression." People stand up and share, sometimes very intimate things, with the group. A woman stands up and tells the group the following. (There is another story line kinda going on with a couple people in the audience during this time, but we hear her whole story front and center).
So, two nights ago, I decides I was going to confront my husband about how dissatisfied I was with our sex life, but instead of being supportive, he got really mad at me. He started yelling. I start yelling back which we always do. We have these terrible fights, but this time it's just about sex. and suddenly out of nowhere he says, just let me go down on you. He never said anything like that before to me. I immediatly got so...turned on. I was just ready - ready yo be responsible and accountable for all my own sexual desires. I was ready for him to go down on me.
This, again, is not technically eligible for an SSL review because it doesn't specifically talk about female orgasm or masturbation. However, she does say that she's 'dissatisfied' with her sex life, and in common talk about women, that tends to mean she isn't orgasming or finding 'pleasure' (a word that is often interchanged and confused with orgasm). Anyway, to me this was a story the writers wrote about a woman that wasn't orgasming or not orgasming much with her husband, but ended up initiating a situation in which her husband offered to do something for her that would allow her to orgasm with him. It was a turning point for them and her that was positive for her orgasm and sex life.

Again, I'm gonna list some thing that I think are cool about this.

1 Oral sex, of course, is a way that women can orgasm because, unlike intercourse, it involves direct, intentional, consistent stimulation to the outer clitoral glans and vulva area. That oral sex offered by her husband was a turn on and a turning point for her ability to be more 'satisfied' in their sexual relationship is realistic.
2 Of all the stories the writers could have chosen to throw into this scene, they chose one like this. i appreciate that.
3 She speaks of being responsible and accountable for her own sexual desires. I think that, in general, is a thing that needs more discussion and attention when it comes to women because there is a strong and problematic sense out there in the world that men should be responsible for women's orgasms. Granted, any partner should be held accountable for allowing space for and valuing their partners orgasm as well as their own, but men have long been expected to 'give' women an orgasm. Given that most men and most women have been handed terrible, incorrect advice and ridiculous examples of how women physically come, and also that many women are pressured against having masturbated so are not even aware themselves of how they orgasm, this is a terrible situation. Women would do well to work towards being more accountable and responsible for their own orgasm...then at least someone in in the sexual situation will know how to get it done.

The Vulva Rating
So, neither of these are technically SSL reviewable scenes, but I think that they are good examples of the thoughtfulness and general orgasm equality awareness this show seems to have. This is a normal ol' cable show so the sex in it is limited a bit. However, the writing of the sex scenes is still creative and realistic and actually add something to the story of these characters. I respect all of that, and I LOVE that of all the possibilities out there, the sex acts discussed and depicted in these seasons were not status quo and also were thoughtful of the female orgasm. To me, it makes this show better than most and super progressive in the Orgasm Equality department.  I give this SSL Review a 5 vulva rating.
